Our Work

Our Commitment Not to Discriminate

The Patrician Society of Central Norristown is committed to ensuring that no individual shall, on the basis of race, national origin, sex, age, religion or handicap be excluded from participation in, be denied benefits of, or be otherwise subjected to discrimination in any program or activity of the organization.

The Emergency Food Cupboard

The Patrician Society Emergency Food Cupboard provides a grocery basket designed to supply enough food for all family members in a verifiably needy family to have 3 meals a day for 3 days. Families who require additional support are referred to a social worker who assesses other needs. Where funds are available, the Patrician Society also provides assistance with heating oil, uninsured medical supplies, rental, furniture and travel costs. In 2009, nearly 1,300 different verifiably needy families received grocery baskets and various other essentials from the Patrician Society. Wherever we can, we use volunteers for cupboard tasks such as intake, food sorting, grocery package makeup and distribution as well as other jobs required to supply food to our needy patrons. Since we are able to generate donations from a wide area, we have no geographic boundaries in terms of providing service. If a potential client can prove an economic need, we will do all we can to help out.

Summer Camp for Children

Each summer the Patrician Society Summer Day Camp enrolls forty children ages five through eleven in each of six one-week sessions providing recreational and educational opportunities for as many as 240 children (limited to 40 in each of 6 one-week sessions). In 2010, our 30th annual camp will open on Tuesday, July 6. Program staff includes a director and three associate directors. Funding is provided by private donations, individual contributions and minimal program fees. Camp activities on Mondays and Fridays include the usual array of arts & crafts, sports, games, music and videos. Every Tuesday and Wednesday the camp visits various educational and recreational sites. Thursdays are spent at French Creek State Park swimming pool. Applications will be available on May 1, 2010. Space is limited to 40 kids in each session, so contact the office by telephone or email on or after May 1 in order to get on board for our 30th annual camp!
